  2. Finnish sculptor best known for his
  3. monumental figures and busts portraying
  4. citizens of Finland, following the country's
  5. independence in 1917. He was one of the early
  6. 20th-century pioneers of direct carving and
  7. favoured granite as his medium. The bronze
  8. monument to the athlete Nurmi (1925, Helsinki
  9. Stadium) and the bust of the composer
  10. Sibelius (1928) are examples of his work.
